Maypole Dancing - A Brief History

Gypsies' Tent

 Music - audio/gypsies tent.mp3

FORMATION
Two concentric circles. The inside dancers do not move in this dance - they should stand (or kneel) facing out with the ribbon coming over their right shoulder. These ribbons need to be kept as rigid as possible. The outside dancers hold the ribbon in their right hand and face their partner.

DANCE - WIND UP
Outside dancers dance clockwise once round their own partner (4 bars). Then dance clockwise round the insider who is on their left (the next one round in a clockwise direction) (4 bars). Then dance clockwise round their own partner to finish in original place (4 bars). Then dance clockwise round the insider who is on their right (the next one round in an anticlockwise direction) (4 bars). Then dance clockwise round their own partner to finish in original place (4 bars).

DANCE - UNWIND
Outsiders reverse the moves to finish in original place. All finish facing out and bow.

NOTES
Outside dancers need to identify the 3 insiders they will be dancing round before they start the dance. Insiders need to hold their ribbons as rigid as possible. Outsiders need to be careful not to pull too tightly on their ribbons. It is possible to go through another sequence before unwinding. This will carry the zigzag effect further down the pole. This is a difficult dance for children to see the pattern of the movements. Spiders Web (q.v.) has a similar final effect and is easier.
