Maypole Dancing - A Brief History

Single Plait

Music - audio/single plait.mp3

FORMATION
One circle, partners facing each other. Ribbons held in hand nearest the pole.

DANCE - WIND UP
All dancers weave in and out  as they dance round the pole in whichever direction they started facing. Start by passing right, then left with next, right with next and so on So clockwise dancers will start by going out (over) and anticlockwise dancers by going in (under).

DANCE - UNWIND
Reverse direction of dance to finish facing out and bow.

NOTES
This dance ‘crosses’ the music and finishes when the plait has gone too far down the pole to wind up properly. When unwinding, dancers should keep a close eye on the pattern of ribbons on the pole. They should then be able to tell whether they should go over or under the oncoming dancer. In this way, any mistakes made during the wind up can be corrected during the unwind. Tangles made during the unwind can only be corrected if the dance is stopped immediately the occur.. Always do this dance last in your programme! It is the one people most enjoy to see and the one most likely to result in a tangle during unwind which will take a very long time to sort out. If you do get a tangle, get the children to stay with their ribbon - sorting it out on your own will take hours.
